** Your final grade will be comprised of grades based on meeting all of the deadlines and the thoroughness of the proposal, script, and storyboard, so be sure to come to class prepared! The final is worth 25% of your overall grade, so please take every deadline seriously!
This final represents the culmination of a semester's exploration in video art. We have worked with many different genres and styles. This is your opportunity to create something film-festival worthy, a short film that is stunning, thoughtful, exciting! You have four weeks to creating this piece, so the expectations are HIGH. We will go through the entire process from ideation through post-production, and to create a film that is ready for festival or exhibition submission.
Create a 3-6 minute video, content of your own choice, but approved by the professor. You may choose to experiment with form and content / concept. You may make an experimental piece, a narrative, or a documentary.The only RULES are that it must be a technically well-done, professionally shot vide art work, and you CANNOT use any copyrighted sound, unless doing a parody. The following are NOT PERMITTED: MTV-style music video (unless it is your own music), commercial / promotional video.
You may also create a video installation (single or multi-channel), considering the space where you will install the piece. You will need to follow the School of Art Installation Policy to acquire and reserve the space.
If you are not sure what you want to create, please schedule a meeting outside of class with the professor who will be happy to help you brainstorm something you are excited about and that builds on your strengths demonstrated this semester.
Things to Consider:
- Don't hesitate to seek assistance from your classmates, particularly for production! You won't get professional results if you attempt to shoot, direct, and star in the piece!
- Shoot this professionally: play with the Depth of Field, use a tripod or our steadicam, Be sophisticated in your cinematography!
- Be sure to carefully consider sound in this piece. The soundtrack should be complex and should incorporate sync sound, ambient sound, voiceover, sound effects (foley).
- Carefully thought out editing is essential! Consider pacing, transitions, types of shots, etc.
- Create professional / appropriate titles and credits on your final master (be sure to use the required BGSU-DA credit at the end). BGSUCreditsforfilms.docx
- Transitions: Transitions generally relate to the passage of time. A dissolve usually gives the sense that a relatively short period of time has passed from one shot to the next (perhaps several hours or a day), and a fade to / fade up from black usually gives the sense that a longer period of time has passed (perhaps months or years). Wipes are often used to transition between two distinct scenes or narrative spaces. Use transitions with INTENTION.
- Time: cutting rhythm affects the passage of time. Consider experimenting with time: distort it, disrupt it, speed it up, slow it down, etc. using varied cutting rhythms, transitions, etc.
- Use a tripod. (It usually IS necessary!)
- The piece must be a resolved and complete piece, not an exercise.
PART 1: Professional Proposal & Synopsis: (Due Tuesday, 11/15): You must write a professional, well-written, and detailed Project Proposal. This must include separate PARAGRAPHS for each of the following:
- Your concept clearly stated (the main point of your video).
What your intention is with the piece (what you want the audience to think about with the piece).
- Types of shots and camera work you will utilize when shooting, location of the piece, etc. Also what you want the piece to "look like" (the treatment, aesthetic, etc.), if applicable.
- Details about the soundtrack - how you will use all three types of sound (music, sound effects, and speech)
